Street Life

It’s Friday. So it must be market day.  Mind you, small town markets are no longer what they used to be, Yet nevertheless they are an important part of the fabric of any town and community.
Romsey is fortunate in boasting a market on three days a week, and on the first Sunday of the month as well, with the Farmers’ Market.
Perhaps this one bucks the trend because its three times a week routine is a far cry from the days I first remember it being tucked away in a nearby pub car park on a Saturday morning.
Even so, I still find something fascinating about market places, and some of the most intriguing are the indoor markets — like Borough Market in London which is something of a foodie’s paradise.  Street markets, wherever they are held, are a welcome part of the community.
I recall visiting one market in a shoe industry city where the Saturday market in the expansive main square was a magnet for fashion and workaday footwear.  Another city, another country, and the market there specialised in electronic gadgetry, yet another city in a different country and it is flowers. And then of course there is the city I’ve visited a few times where the market is below street level, and at night.

Back in Romsey, maybe the needs of the townspeople are less ambitious than the expectations of the bigger tourist centres.  But I believe the market place represents the foundations of trade and commerce, and I have every respect for market life
