Wine and witches
Well, I am just back from a gallery opening with a difference – instead of wine and polite conversation we had home made strawberry wine, performance and witches.
For writer Katherine Macfarlane (left) and visual artist Karen Strang have a shared interest in women’s history and tonight their collaborative project Voices of Ashes was performed in the Greengates gallery, Culross.
Its nearly 500 years since witches in this small Fife coastal town of Culross, were executed, burnt at the stake, garrotted.
Their stories have been forgotten for men have written history. Now Katherine and Karen aim to redress these injustices by giving back the herstories of the victims in words and images based on an emotional response to the facts recorded at the time .
What made this evening’s event so poignant is that the violence against women which they spoke about happening in this quiet fishing village 500 years ago is still perpetuated in many parts of the world today.
