DAY 3...SOUNION

I have waited 30 years to see the stunning sunset at Sounion.

The history...if you are interested......
Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.The story goes that Aegeus was led to believe that his son had been killed in his contest with the dreaded Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull. Theseus had volunteered to attempt to slay the beast. He had agreed with his father that if he survived the contest, he would hoist a white sail on his return. In fact, Theseus had successfully overcome and slain the Minotaur, but tragically had simply forgotten about the white sail. So the King leapt to his death.

I used to work in Greece teaching English and there were signs everywhere to Sounion and people used to tell me "you've got go"....so after asking, begging and hoping we made it.

We started the day meeting up with the rest of our Big Greek extended Family...Thanos and Rosina...as well as Maria and her Mum. We enjoyed a fabulous time at their beach resort Varkizas....the Greek Rivera . Then we went for a great lunch (see collared blip journal)...where we chatted, ate, laughed for so long it was a mad dash to Sounion ...hence the reason we missed the sun going down!!!!!!!!! So glad we stopped en route to watch it!

The Rev also forgot the camera battery and we had to go back to hotel!!

However it was an amazing place and so memorable to share it with our special Greek family.

Afterwards we went to the 5* hotel for a drink after blagging our way in!!!!! This was lovely however it meant we were so late back after an hour drive that Maria's mum missed her last train and had to get the night bus back!!!!

212/366.....a chance to at last make it to Sounion after 30 years....but as we sort of missed it will may have to return again.
