Actual wildlife for Wednesday!
This time I was ready for the crow! I spotted him as soon as I parked and he stayed there, preening himself, as I got several good shots. Since I was shooting into the sun, a lot of this was guesswork.
For those of you who've been following me, I found out what those mushrooms are. They're maitake mushrooms, and are one of the main culinary mushrooms of Japan. They also have medicinal qualities, and their extract may help to slow tumor growth. To quote Wikipedia, Grifola frondosa is a polypore mushroom that grows in clusters at the base of trees, particularly oaks. The mushroom is commonly known among English speakers as hen of the woods, hen-of-the-woods, ram's head and sheep's head.
