Sliver of Silver
We took a drive eastward at dusk. Great Horned Owls and Night hawks surveyed the land from phone pole perches. A sliver of a moon rose in the west through hues of mauve and blue.
Our drive was an escape from a day of little deaths. Why today, did two female Western Tanagers and a Downy Woodpecker fly into into the glass on different decks of the house? These deaths on this lovely summer day left us feeling bereft.
Owls, Night hawks, a rising moon, mountains in relief, crickets chirping, the smell of cut hay; these things helped to relieve our sadness and restore our spirits.
(Although we have some warning decals on the glass I went out and put up small sticky notes on the glass panes to prevent future crashes.)
