A favorite bee....
I had a wonderful day out today with Historian31, visiting some amazing churches on the west side of West Sussex, luckily for us they were all open so I was also able to photograph the stained glass windows, and the brass Eagle lecterns.
On our way around I was able to stop very briefly at Iping common to check on my favorite bee Anthophora bimaculata, a flower bee from the same genus as The Hairy-footed flower bee blipped earlier this year.
Anthophora bimaculata is like a tiny frenetic bumble bee with huge eyes and an equally huge high pitch buzz!! always moving and especially difficult to photograph! It is a southern species that nests in sandy banks, and nests can be substantial.
I have included a shot of Dark mullein Verbascum nigrum, in my extras as it is a really spectacular plant. Growing on chalky soil this bi-annual has long flower spikes of yellow flowers with hairy purple stamens - a real beauty!
