Our Old House

We purchased this house new in 1970 and lived here for 30 years.

We had to plant grass and all the trees. On the left is a Tulip Poplar that our son brought home in a coffee cup after attending a Cub Scout Jamboree. That tree is now, 42 years later, about three feet in diameter. We planted a row of pine trees on the right to mark the lot line.and now they are higher than the house.

The little subdivision of about 30 houses was built by Bud Anderson and his helper Sam. Yes, Bud and Sam would built a house, and they would build one or two per year. We were three miles out of town in the corner of a field of good Indiana topsoil which would grow nice gardens.

We were in the corner of our little "town" so we had either a corn field or a soybean field for neighbors. Originally the house was a fine mustard color. Eventually the aluminum siding faded to a very pleasant pale yellow. Now the new owners are in the process of painting the siding white.

I picked out this four bedroom house in my first week of work in LaPorte without Lois seeing it. When she first looked in through the front window, she gave an immediate approval after seeing the blue and turquoise carpet in the living room. Later I built a fireplace in the family room which led me to teach myself to lay bricks. The first night I laid one brick.

As I recall we paid about $35,000 for this house. Eventually we would sell it for about $130,000.
