Magnificent Avon
With picturesque river scenes like this it is not difficult to appreciate just why the River Avon and Salisbury is looked upon very much part of Constable country.
Much of the 18th century artist’s work is centred around Suffolk where the landscape painter John Constable was born. But he also had a special affinity with Salisbury, the Avon and the Cathedral.
His paintings are classed as romantic, and are recognised for a striking perspective of the English countryside, and in Salisbury capturing both the beauty of the meadows on the outskirts of the city, the tranquillity of the Avon and the majesty of the Cathedral.
So pause by the side of this part of the river where it runs through the city, just a stone’s throw from one of the most famous views of the Cathedral. John Constable’s perspective of the city was reflected in his paintbrush, a far cry from my perception through the lens of a camera. Not even a camera as such, but my iPhone.
Maybe the technology for capturing landscape beauty has changed beyond recognition, but the sheer beauty portrayed remains as vibrant as ever. There’s an 187 year timespan since the era when Constable was recording the splendour of Salisbury. Fast forward another 187 years to 2203, and I wonder just how future generations will capture the splendour of the river.
