A Laughing Cry

Woolies

It was sad walking around here earlier today.

Surely this cannot be the death of Woolworths? This was where I brought my first music single and my early Star Wars toys. Taking away Woolworths would be like taking away Sunday Roasts or red post boxes.

Though it was plain to see. Large notices outside the premises told you that the administrators were in and that life was not rosy at F.W.Woolworth & Co.

The brand never survived in its motherland; the USA, but somehow it continued on in the UK defying its inevitability. In Australia it developed into something like Tesco. Indeed in South Africa it is something of an upper class grocer having lifted M&S Simply Food and rebranding it in another hemisphere. But in the UK it continued as the 'jack of all trades and the master of none'....

I noticed plenty of bargains but didn't have the heart to capitalise on it. I was here to soak up what could be my last visit to what once was an institution.
