The agreement had been that on Friday, when Spouseman returned from a week on the mainland, we would go to our favourite restaurant with our French neighbours. However, on Friday morning I received a telephone call from B to alert me to the fact that A was in a heightened state of anxiety and so it would not be possible to have him ready to go out in the evening. We would postpone the whole thing to Saturday. Fine.
On Saturday Spouseman and I discussed whether or not we should double-check that we still had a date with the neighbours and concluded that since they had been capable of cancelling by telephone on Friday, they would be equally capable of cancelling by telephone on Saturday if they so wished.
So at the appointed time we went up to collect them and no, they weren't going out tonight. Of course had they had the courtesy to tell us that in advance we might have been in a position to cook our own dinner at home or invite somebody else out to join us but no, that would involve thinking about others.
No, this is not our favourite restaurant, but one we passed earlier in the day.
