Thornton Abbey Gatehouse

Can't think why we've never visited before as it's only 40 minutes away. This is the enormous ornate fortified gatehouse. It was one of the richest Augustinian abbeys in Britain. The abbey is one of the few that survived the Suppression of the Monasteries by becoming a secular college until it was eventually closed in 1547.
It must have been spectacular in its day as the ruins are very impressive today.
