Skulls on tomb stones

It is quite a feature of old burial yards in Kent that the tomb stones have skulls on them. After a certain amount of research there appears to be no confirmed opinion of why. Some theories say it is to do with the Knights Templar, some say the Masons. Anyway quite intriguing and slightly grissly. This photo and the extra are from Mary the Virgin church in Fordwich, Kent.
