Valley of the Rocks

After a couple of long lies, we were all up early to find a scorching hot day.  We packed a picnic and headed to Lynton on the North Devon Coast.  Around fifteen years ago, TT and I camped near Lynton and had a week of walking along the coast and on Exmoor.  Today we wandered around the village trying to remember things from our previous visit – not very successfully.  We decided to walk along the coastal cliff path to the Valley of the Rocks.  It was a perfect day and the views were fantastic – all around and over to south Wales.  I am not a great fan of cliff walks, with sheer drops to water, so didn’t look down!  We walked back to Lynton via Hollerday Hill.  The views were fantastic – all around and over the Bristol Channel to South Wales.

We planned a picnic in the village, but couldn’t find a decent spot, so ended up driving back out to the Valley of the Rocks for a picnic on the cliffs – not too close to the edge.  Once back in Lynton, we walked down the steep cliff path to Lynmouth and continued to walk up the river to Watersmeet, where the National Trust has a lovely waterside tea room.  Given the heat of the day, it was a lovely spot to stop for a rest and a refreshment, before we walked  back down the other side of the river through the woods to Lynmouth.

BB spotted a playpark and amazingly still had enough energy to run around.  We took the cliff railway back up to Lynton before heading home.

After a wonderful day of walking in the heat – we were all exhausted when we got home.
