Halden Canal
In the latter half of the 20th century the mill pumped such a large quantity of pollutants into the Halden Canal (pictured) that it caused not only the canal, but also the whole of Iddefjord to become complete devoid of life. This was noticed by the local fisherman etc, who lobbied the mill to clean up it's act. Through the 70's 80's and 90's the mill reduced the concentration of pollutants in it's effluent, and through a monitoring programme in the canal and also downstream in Iddefjord, it showed that overall pollution levels decreased. By the turn of the century the industrial pollution has reduced so low that it was as if no industrial activity took place at all. Marine life well and truly thrives nowadays, there's even a salmon ladder at each lock to let the salmon swim upstream.
