The ancestral home of George Washington the first US President - hence why Washington in the USA is its namesake.  This dates back to shortly after the Norman conquests. Washington's great grandfather fled England under pressure from Cromwell it seems, as he was seen as a royalist. So, perversely, the US is again built on English royalist ancestry and principles !!  Washington was also the original 'Brexiteer' as he led America's war of independence against England.  It is also ironic that the Sunderland area also voted overwhelmingly for Brexit on June 23rd. It must be something in the genes - or perhaps the water perhaps...  Explains a lot really.
