A well travelled soldier
We are staying in the village of Dervaig, on Mull. As luck would have it, immediately across the road there is a small and ancient graveyard.
The stone at the right of the photograph looks ordinary enough, but it is the grave of a soldier who fought in some of the great battles of the 19th century. The inscription is covered in lichens and hard to make out, but reads:
In memory of
Corpl. John Campbell
Late 79th Cameron Highlanders
and 92nd Gordon Highlanders
Who died at Dervaig
26th September 1912
Aged 80 years
Fought at Sebastapol, Alma
Balaclava and Indian Mutiny
