Mono Monday/Small : : Ozzie
When it comes to smell, it would seem that dogs have no peers. They possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us. The part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is, proportionally speaking, 40 times greater than ours. There are a number of other ways in which a dog's sense of smell is superlative. If you would like to read more about the unique features of a dog's nose and also why the author's dog always tried to pee on his friend but nobody else, you can check out this amusing link entitled "Dogs' Dazzling Sense of Smell.
Ozzie graciously volunteered grabbed the bone out of my hand when I tried to illustrate his acute sense of smell. It's not easy to manage, dog, bone and camera all at once. It is interesting to note that a couple of weeks ago, when our neighbors came to dinner, they brought their dogs and three bones. There was no fighting and each dog settled down with his own bone, but before he left, Hank, the basset hound disappeared outside with his bone and came back without it. Ozzie found it buried under a palm tree yesterday….
