Lady Day
My sisters and I went this evening to an excellent local production of "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill." The play was an imagined stage performance of Billie Holiday, set at a small South Philadelphia bar in 1959, about four months before her death. The actress portraying "The Lady" sang wonderfully and captured the essence of Billie's talented but tragic life.
"You can't copy anybody and end with anything. If you copy, it means you're working without any real feeling. No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music."
