Old Ship Meetinghouse, Hingham, Massachusetts
Dear Diary,
We visited the Old Ship Meetinghouse today. First built in 1680, it is the oldest meetinghouse in America that has been in continuous use since its construction. The timbers use to build it were from Red Oak trees which were 600 years when then were felled in 1680. The meeting house was restored in 2013 and it was such a pleasure to tour this significant piece of American history. One of the early members was Samuel Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's 4X great grandfather who moved to HIngham in 1635. Exterior, extra photograph, shows windows added in 1869 when the meetinghouse was "upgraded" to the Victorian style (quite hideous!). All the "improvements" were removed in 1930 when the building was brought back to the 17th aesthetic, thankfully.
Last night we went to the little local theater to see Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant in the film Florence Foster Jenkins. See it if you can.
