Millennium Monument - L'Ancresse common

This Menhir like rock was actually errected in 1999 to celebrate the Millennium and was 'opened' by the Queen. The area where it stands on L'Ancresse common has many authentic megalithic sites and so in many ways is quite in keeping. The block of stone was found nearby and there initially was some speculation about its origins, but there was no evidence of it being 'worked' by ancient hands. It is 20 feet tall and weighs 28 tons. It was a monumental task to move it to its current location, even with modern equipment, which makes you appreciate the skill of prehistoric man, building their dolmens , standing stones etc.
