With one of the shortest turnaround times between guest departure and arrival and only one pair of hands to do all the work inside and out is probably not the best time to experiment with exposure compensation settings. Much more work is required, I probably need to be able to pick and choose my time of day and I probably need to take down the insect screen.
Meanwhile, the entomologist friend has responded with some truly fascinating stuff!
"Your mantis is a female, the genitalia are quite different between the two sexes.
The lack of pigmentation in the eyes shows that it has just moulted and the wings indicate that this was from a nymph to an adult. However, one wing seems to have crumpled or possibly not straightened out yet, but it looks in an unnatural position. Insects don't always moult successfully!
Mantis nymphs may be green or brown (sometimes red or yellow) but if they find themselves with a different background then their colour may change during a few hours after moulting. If this one stays on lemon trees then it will probably go green.
Yes there will be two compound eyes and three ocelli in a triangle between them. The simple eyes just gather light.
Investigations have demonstrated that a mantis can see prey up to 30cm away. We would just be a moving shape that had to be watched in case it was dangerous.
Sound and hearing are complicated. There is an old philosophical question – does a falling tree make a sound when there is no one to hear it? The answer is no. The reason being that sound is air vibration and the hearing bit requires a sense organ and a brain. The total effect that air vibration has depends on the organ it stimulates. Insect vibration receptors are mostly hairs if external and groups of special vibration sensitive cells if internal. The mantis will respond to the vibrations we make and the air we displace, but we will not actually make a sound to them."
After 72 hours the mantis was still on the lemon tree looking just as dishevelled as she was on Tuesday
