The Battle for Newport Pagnell
Today I went to a staging by the English Civil War Society of the attack on Newport Pagnell by the Royalists, which will be followed tomorrow by the re-taking of it by the Parliamentarians. Unfortunately there were a few heavy showers (but I had my brolly) and the heavens opened just when I got back to the car. Nice to see John RH and W here as well.
Newport Pagnell was a small market town in the 17th century and it became a location of strategic importance in the Civil War. The fortress stayed loyal to the Parliamentarian cause, except for the 12 days it was taken over by the Royalists. At its peak, 1500 troops were based here. Oliver Cromwell fought alongside its troops and it was a muster point for much of his army before the decisive Battle of Naseby.
