Dr. Seuss in Springfield

We visited the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield MA today, to see  a marvelous loan exhibition entitled  "Photo-Secession: Painterly Masterworks of Turn-of-the-Century Photography". Depite the awkward title, it's a vivid and coherent survey of photography from ca. 1900 to 1920, when it greatly expanded its boundaries as an art form.  It was accompanied by a much smaller but intriguing show of black-and-white photos from the permanent collection.

The blip image shows the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, in the wide Horton Court, bordered by Springfield's museums.  The creator of Dr. Seuss, Thodor Seuss Geisel, grew up in Springfield, although he moved to New York in his 20s.

It was a stimulating outing, though on a very hot day. The region is drier than ever.
