With my great great great grandparents
We had a fun filled day exploring and scrambling along Jasper Beach made up of only smooth stones, Starboard Creek's craggy ledges and on to Clark's Point. We ended with a walk to the shore at the end of Clark's Point to see the Native American petroglyphs that were pounded 3-5000 years ago into the ledges and to hunt for flint arrowheads. I stopped along the way to visit my great great great grandparents, Benjamin and Hannah Clark. This point of land was also the birthplace of my maternal grandfather who grew up in the house we are in here in Machiasport. The story goes that he was so tiny when he was born that he was swaddled and placed in a warm wood fired oven.
I did find a rather well formed flint arrowhead for Memories4Me, the Native Americans gathered there on the shore and bluff, making flint arrow points for hunting. Countless mistakes were cast away and never used in their hunts. These actually still sharp points have washed in and out with the tides and sometimes show themselves for the lucky looker/taker. It's not as good as this one I found some years ago, but not bad for having been washed by the tides for 3000 years.
Long ago, this was a sacred place
and one where strong men
fashioned seemingly limitless
stone projectiles.
tumbled by the tides,
now freed by the embankment,
they still wash up
in our lives,
a pointed reminder
of those who nurtured
this ancient beach.
For the Record,
This day came in sunny and warm, just perfect!
All hands healthy, tired and some are freckled...
