The Clock

This clock was erected by a garden club in 2009.  It is on the main street in Shallotte, NC a town about 9 miles from my house.  Parts of the town are dilapidated as you can see, but most of it is quite pleasant and serves the needs of town residents plus those coming to three nearby island beaches.
Shallotte is pronounced sha-lote with a short "a" (the sound you make when the Dr. says say AH), and the second syllable sounding like oat with an L in front - it rhymes with goat.

The Town of Shallotte was incorporated on March 6, 1899. Settlement of the area dates back to around 1750 with an earlier reference to the river and the town as early as 1734.  In the early years, residents relied on agriculture, fishing and a bustling waterfront full of flatboats, rafts and other small water crafts used to transport goods to and from this rural part of Brunswick County.  According to some accounts, Shallotte received its name from a traveler who crossed the river by ferry and referred to the river as the "Charlotte" River. The Charlotte River later took on the name of the Shallotte River. The town was later called Shallotte.
