Trouble in Madrid

I went to Madrid last month and within an hour of arriving I found myself caught up in the miners' protests against the Spanish government's cuts in subsidies to the industry.

A few hours later, coming out of a bar near the capital's main square, Puerta del Sol, I encountered the culmination of the day's events and no sooner had I been in the street than a flare was thrown at the crowds of people by the Madrid police.

I'd had a couple of beers so I think it was that Dutch courage that made me stay to take photos and even, accidentally, finding myself at the head of the crowd poking my zoom lens at the line of riot police advancing on us!
