Changing train
What do you do if you want to run an international train through two countries that use different widths of rails? I discovered the answer to this question between midnight and 2am in a railway shed just over the border in Belarus.
What you do is separate all the coaches and individually winch them up (very smoothly so the passengers don't notice the height movement) and change the entire mechanism underneath! It took a while but was interesting to watch. The picture isn't great because the lights in the carriage were bright and caused reflections and the windows didn't open.
After this process the train was put back together and continued its journey across Belarus. I slept much better on this train than on last night's Cologne to Warsaw one. Around 11am the train crossed into Russia and arrived in Moscow mid-afternoon.
