Liliput
Our Thursday day out was designed to accomodate possible rainy weather, with a fallback plan of fresh beach-side fish and chips eaten in the car, gazing at crashing waves through a fast-wiped windscreen. It didn't come to that, though, as the weather behaved itself until we had returned.
Our destination, before reaching the coast, was Blue Pool on the Furzebrook Estate. This is a former clay pit whose water can appear blue due to diffracted light reflected by minute particles of clay that are suspended in the water, though on this occasion it was vividly turquoise, with reflected blue patches. After a light lunch we spent a couple of enjoyably tranquil hours walking around the pool and on many of the higher paths that roam across the 25-acre park.
We next stopped at Wareham for a walk along the River Frome in the sunshine before heading east above Wareham Channel and Poole Harbour. In Hamworthy I noticed a sign for Cobbs Quay, which contains a marina beside Holes Bay, a mecca of luxurious yachts and boats, which we explored.
Shortly after that I paused briefly in Liliput on the north-east side of Poole Harbour, heading towards Sandbanks, to grab this shot of a jetty. Poole Harbour, though, is sheltered from the sea, and we didn't reach the open seas of Poole Bay until we found Canford Cliffs and walked down a cliff path to the beach, where finally we were able to blissfully savour the salty air, the gulls and the sounds of the breaking waves. One of us may have had a paddle in the sea (it wasn't me).
