Cased Caddis

This is my favourite of all the felt pieces on the ApplebyRiver Art Trail. It has been beautifully felted, better in my opinion than any of the others. And it has withstood a lot of rain, left out here in all weathers. Interestingly, it was crafted by the youngest group – 1st Appleby Brownies. They have certainly learnt how to felt during this activity.
 
Strangely though, the piece itself has only a tenuous link with the theme of the floods, but perhaps I just can't see it. The felted piece has been wrapped round a dead tree and is called Cased Caddis. The idea is something like the larvae of the River fly dragging its ‘home’ around with it at all times, until it metamorphoses, emerging as an adult to fly above the river.
 
‘The dead tree has been encased like a Cased Caddis to represent the ‘dressing’ of the symbolic wound left by the trauma of the flooding on Appleby.’
 
Not sure about this, but it is a lovely piece of felting nevertheless.
