Poppies : Wave

We had a day out in Lincoln today, collecting our daughter and granddaughter on the way past Doncaster.

We went to visit the "Poppies : Wave" installation in the grounds of Lincoln Castle. This was originally part of the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red display at the Tower of London in the autumn of 2014.It certainly made you pause for thought. Several thousands of the ceramic poppies - each one representing a life lost in the First World War. This display only a fraction of the total - and probably less than the total lost in a day on the Somme.

After visiting this we wandered round the castle and cathedral area and then walked down 'Steep Hill' to town. For any of you who know Lincoln, you know how steep this is!

A walk around the city centre (which has changed so much since we lived there 30 years ago) and then lunch.

After I lunch I walked back UP Steep Hill pushing granddaughter in her pushchair, a true lung busting exercise. My fitbit registered 17 flights of stairs. Not easy and some parts are cobbled to add to the difficulty!  Mrs madwill and our daughter went to catch the free bus to the top - however they were disappointed to find it was not running for a couple of hours, so they had to walk back up as well - they were about 15 minutes behind me and had made several stops on the way!

A  grand day out to visit one of our old haunts and pay respects.
