Olympics- canoe sprint- Eton Dorney
Another good Olympics day out. We left home at 7am to drive to Maidenhead then caught one of the many free shuttle buses to the venue. It was a bit of a walk but on a plastic walkway thing so easy going. Security was like at an airport but took about 1 minute. We've been very impressed with the organisation at everything we've been at so far (3 different venues).
We saw canoeing (doubles) and kayaking (singles, doubles and quads) heats and semis. Distances were 500m or 1000m. This is canoeing and kayaking is sitting in a boat with a double ended paddle. It looked really hard work. And some of the outfits were a bit odd!
The women's K1 and women's K2 heats were very odd. In the K1 there was 25 women in 4 heats (3x6 and 1x7). 24 qualified for the semi final! The one who missed out was the 7th place person. A shame as there were 5 women who were slower than her! The K2 was similar with 17 in the heats going for 16 semi final places!
There were only Brits in 2 races so all the Brits just randomly chose who to cheer for in each race. Expect for in the race in this photo where there was an Angolan pair. They were miles behind (40 secs behind in a 3 min race) but got so much support from the crowd, we were all screaming for them. I nearly cried at how lovely everyone was!
Afterwards we watched the mens triathlon on the big screens and we all went wild when Alistair Brownlee sauntered over the line to take gold. He is amazing. I want him to be my coach! And so great to see his little brother get a medal too. I correctly predicted the top 3 in that race.
