Sissinghurst Castle Gardens

We visited this beautiful National Trust property in Kent and it was stunning.
It was Vita Sackville-West,  along with her husband Harold Nicolson who bought Sissinghurst Castle in 1930, a ruined Elizabethan manor house.  Although Sissinghurst was derelict, they purchased the ruins and the farm around it and began constructing the garden we know today. The layout by Nicolson and planting by Sackville-West were both strongly influenced by the gardens of Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens.

The small but intense pleasure of walking through dry leaves and kicking them as you go.....They rustle, they brustle, they crackle......"  from Walking Through Leaves - Vita Sackville West
