A lobsterman at work
You can see the depth of the Machias River in this shot of a lobsterman checking his traps so close to shore across the river. This shot was taken at flowing tide, from low to high. This river was once home to a multitude of sea going schooners. Many large and small vessels and of sail during the heyday years of coastal and ocean trade routes dotted the water. The cemetery next to is filled with graves of those lost at sea. Lost in the waters off Cuba and other places far from this rocky coast. My grandfather fell in with the boys his age, becoming men at sea, or those working in the Lighthouse Service. Grandpa did both, retiring as a Captain in the Coast Guard.
We had a really fabulous day yesterday. A shop in North Lubec that we had never been in was open, amazing handmade felted wall hangings with Maine motives and paintings. We spent a long time chatting with the artist and bought some wonderful things. There was a cool flea market in the Grange Hall next door and I found a cool old panama hat for $5.
We left Lubec and headed north to Dennysville to an exhibit of the work that John James Audubon did there as he was preparing an expedition to Labrador. He waited in Dennysville and Eastport for the schooner that would take him far north in search of native birds. The Historical Society had a very well done educational exhibit set up in an old school house. Prints, copied photos and text of a man with a lifelong dream to depict the birds of North America. In June of 1833 he sailed from Eastport to the uncharted shores of Labrador with hopes of sketching wondrous birds amidst trouble abroad with his printer, threatening to undo all of his work. We bought a very thick new book by Peter B. Logan telling of these adventures and struggles.
We then headed back to Cutler for a rather tough 3 hour walk in Bog Brook Cove Preserve. Beautiful, steep and root and rock filled trails led us to the sea and back.
Very hungry and thirsty, we headed back to Lubec on a very wooded stretch called the Dixie Road. Coming down a steep hill we were surprised by a young Maine Lynx or Bobcat crossing directly in front of us at the base of the hill!! We were stunned! Very cool! We then proceeded to the Lubec Brewing Company for haddock cakes, heirloom tomato pie and incredible beer brewed right there. The day had a rather wild end with live music and lots of local color!!
Off to Campobello Island, N.B now for another walk on another perfect day.
This day came in sunny, warm with dry air and lovely blue sky.
All hands healthy
