Breakers Break

A great day spent wandering around Portobello looking at the art in Art Walk Porty, and taking photos of some of it, and the artists involved. This though was the 'piece that got away'. 'Breakers' by Juliana Capes was a set of white balloons, partially filled with water and hanging in a cluster from the roof of the Joppa bandstand at the end of Prom. They were arranged to represent breakers on the beach. However the artist was also conscious of the vulnerability of the work and was fully aware it might not last the weekend. I photographed it yesterday lunchtime when it was still complete but apparently by early yesterday evening the balloons had been burst. Someone saw a group of teenagers hanging around beneath the remains. Possibly the culprits? They'd probably have denied it.
Except.
The artist had been prepared and had installed a camera up in the roof space programmed for a 30-second time-lapse and when she checked it later it had captured the whole thing. Not to catch the culprits but as part of the installation. Interesting musings on the nature of engagement with public art.
