Peace Through Unity
We visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield today that lies within the Crow Indian reservation near Crow Agency, MT. The overcast, sometimes rainy weather, fit the somber mood of our surroundings. Although we learned about "Custer's Last Stand" in our history classes, I did not listen to the whole story. In 1869, Custer gave Sitting Bull his word he would never "point his gun at a Cheyenne again." And Sitting Bull replied, "if you break your promise, you and your soldiers will go to dust..." We know the rest of this sad story that occurred in June of 1876. My picture shows "The Spirit Warriors sculpture" portion of the Indian memorial to honor Native American participation in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The design of the memorial, whose theme is Peace Through Unity, has much meaning to the Native American people and "provides a universal message for all visitors to this hallowed place."
