Bulls and Eagles
We headed out of Munich this morning in the sunshine towards Salzburg, only to find ourselves in a torrential downpour on the motorway shortly afterwards. After a lot of slow paddling along it, it cleared up eventually - and the mountains appeared to our right.
A quick stop off at Salzburg airport, to visit Hangar 7 - a beautiful glass domed building housing a collection of Red Bull planes, hellicoptors and cars. Amazing what you can achieve with one fizzy drink!
Finally on up into the mountains. Our trip is all about exploring the mountains - everything else was just getting here. We stopped at OberSalzburg, a place made famous because it was a second seat of government for Hitler, and the site of his Berghof (summer residence) and the Eagle's Nest. We took the bus trip up the crazy road to the Eagle's Nest (an interesting bit of history surrounds its construction), and the final lift up to the house (where a road was no longer possible). Fascinating to be in this building, and a really great view. We had many weathers while up there, as you can see from the blip.
Our hotel for the night is our bit of luxury for the trip - in sight of the Eagle's nest, it's a big but luxurious hotel. We had a dip in the lovely warm outdoor pool while gazing up at the surrounding mountains. weirdly, this hotel is built on the site of Goering and Borman's houses.
We're aware when we travel Europe we do tend to visit some slightly macabre places... There's no underlying menace to this other than an interest in history - honestly!
