Naples underground
In 1957 a tiler was repairing a broken tile in a house in Naples - and the result was the discovery of an underground city.
Here you can see a whole street; it has been excavated from the mudslide which had hardened to concrete like proportions. From the excavations, it can be seen how the Romans built on the ruins of the Greek buildings before them, whilst up above us life goes on as usual on the streets of "now" Naples.
We had a truely wonderful tour guide, and it was a personal tour, so there was only the four of us!
I personally learnt more from this tour, and enjoyed it much, much more than a visit to Pompei I did four years ago.
