Unfinished Business?
Perhaps.
I was talking with friends the other day about the Pennine Way. I walked it when I was 16, ( 38 years ago!) just after finishing school and before I started my first job.
I have since convinced my self that I had completed it over a 3 week period, but the memories of it are incomplete . I remember-that it wasn't a particularly pleasant experience( being wet a lot of the time). But that my dad met me at every road crossing and almost every night except when I had no choice but to camp wild.
From my dads perspective, he used up two weeks of his holiday at least, and it must of cost him dear in petrol.
There were some great evenings, and days when he ferried my old vango force 10 for me.
In retrospect, I don't actually recall getting to Yetholm. Infact I don't remember seeing Hadrians wall. But I do remember fish and chips in Alston!
There's only one thing to do, and that Is to do it again. But this time I'll divvy the route up over many weekends
I still have the original walkers guide book. (7s 6d). And a couple of remnants of old one inch maps.
Work is definitely the curse of the drinking classes .
