David's Last Journey
Five years ago my very good friend David Kettlewell died in his sleep. It was no great surprise as he'd had heart problems for several years, but nonetheless it was a shock and very sad.
For reasons of bureaucracy, and timing it was only today that his closest friends were able to gather and scatter his ashes on the waters he'd loved to sail on during the last 6 years of his life. There were no formalities but there was music and singing, which was perfect for David as it was through music, particularly Baroque music and folk music that we all met each other. The harp was the instrument he played most, and we had two harps with us. When the wind blew through the strings they hummed in a most interesting way!
David left me his boat, Lotta, but I recently passed the boat along to a young guy who is planning to sail it to the south of Sweden, and then perhaps further, with his crew of friends. Directly after scattering David's ashes we headed across to Mjällom and helped them set up the boat ready to sail. . (See JanHar's blip.)David would have been very happy to see these young adventurers take over his boat. Perhaps we should have passed his ashes on to them and let them sail away with him!!
