Dead man's penny

The fundraising begins for one of Coigach's Living Landscapes projects which includes the Achlochan path past the remains of a Broch and the firing range where local men practiced before heading off to an uncertain future in the First World War.

There were various documents and artefacts on display including a "Dead Man's Penny" - medals that were issued to the families of those killed in the war. Little compensation!

People still talk about the day Duncan Post had to cycle round ten houses to bring each the dreaded telegram: all families he knew or was related to. Devastating in a tiny community like ours.

We also discussed the possibility of a sculpture or piece of landscape art on the theme of a life more peaceful. And everyone had tea (of course).
