Donkin Reserve

This is a close up view of the lighthouse in yesterday's blip. It was erected in 1861 and worked for over 100 years, but was decommissioned in 1971 as the many city lights interfred with it. It is now a historical monument.
The stone pyramid was built by Sir Rufane Donkin, the first governor of Port Elizabeth, in memory of his wife Elizabeth after whom Port Elizabeth is named.
The building between the two structures houses the tourist information office and a coffee shop. One can climb to the top of the lighthouse and have a good view over the city.
I managed to get this shot inbetween showers of rain!
