Walking in the footsteps of our ancestors.....
Yesterday was such an emotional day for us both but particularly for my husband as we finally found the place his grandfather was held prisoner for 5 years during WW2. Our guide Pawel met us at the station at Torun and took us first to the area where the platform was where he would have arrived by train after being force marched from St. Valery in France where he was captured in 1940. After that he took us to the now derelict fort which we had to sneak into as the owner of the land does not allow visitors to the site....it was so poignant...standing at the gate he would have walked through....
We were able to see inside another identical fort (Fort 4) so that we could see exactly the sort of buildings he was kept in....Pawel also explained about the work details and where he might have been sent every day to work for the Germans as slave labour. The British built one of two huge water towers and also what are now accommodation blocks....which we were also able to see. Torun old town is a beautiful UNESCO world heritage site and it was very beautiful but extremely busy! We finally arrived back in Gdansk at 11:30pm after a full on day...exhausted but humbled by our experiences today....our guide was incredible and so knowledgeable......thank you Pawel.
