Bass Rock

Today's the day .......................... to see for free

A beautiful late afternoon at North Berwick today - the weather positively balmy with blue sky and sun.

I had a walk along the sand and a paddle in the sea, while Will did a painting of the Bass Rock - the very distinctive island in the Firth of Forth. The island plays host to more than 150,000 gannets and is the world's largest single colony of Northern gannets.  Gannets are known traditionally in Scots as the 'solan goose' and in fact its scientific name is Sula bassana .

We were a bit too late to go into the Scottish Seabird Centre - an excellent place to visit.  They have webcams on the Bass which beam back pictures of the seabirds - and a very good café for coffee and cake.  However, there was a telescope mounted on a stand outside and if you inserted a £1 coin, you could point it at the rock and have three minutes viewing time.

I thought I could do better than that with my little camera and all for free.  Here's the result - you can judge for yourself .........................!
