Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2014 Wednesday -- A Current Favorite

Mr. Fun brought this book home to me sometime in August (I think) from the "free box" outside of the Seniors Thrift Store in Cayucos. He handed it to me as he walked in the house and said, "I think you'll like this one!"

And I really do! I have always loved non-fiction. When the school term is happening, finding time for pleasure reading seems almost impossible, but this book is getting read a page at a time and I'm enjoying the story completely.

Most of my community college students detest reading. This is very sad. They are missing world's of wonder between the covers of a book. This week I have given all of my students a pop quiz. In today's class 26 of 26 students failed the pop quiz. The course is NOT calculus; it's basis writing. They are supposed to be learning the eight comma rules, and subjects, verbs, prepositions, capitalization and so on. They just can't be bothered to study.

I emailed each one of them after class today to explain that they are going to fail the class if they don't give the class their quality attention. It was very time consuming to do that, but I'm hoping some of them will get motivated.
