Was It Really So Long Ago

The day was to be yet another warm and sunny one, so I set about clearing the long grass (calling it the wildflower patch is pushing it a bit) underneath the silver birch tree. I'd completed most of the task when I heard a sustained and somewhat frenzied sounding buzzing very nearby. Yes, we have a wasp nest and I was lucky to escape without being stung! Its surprising that we haven't spotted it sooner as there was a steady stream of the insects in and out of the underground nest all day.

Towards the end of the afternoon, I watched these two work together to bite through the end of a grass stem and carry it into their nest, for what purpose I cannot tell.

We'll have to call in the pest specialist though as although Master H has been shown the nest and cautioned about their danger, his young age leads him to be a little too careless for his own good.
