Moniaive

I spent today in Moniaive, singing with the Cairn Chorus, a choir I have just joined. We looked at many of the songs for the Christmas concerts, beautiful songs in several different languages and from different times. There was a potluck lunch and time to chat to other choir members. By the end of the day I was quite tired - I didn't realise how much I had been using my brain as well as my voice!

I had parked the car near the old Moniaive station and Lizzie said she didn't mind waiting while I took a photograph. It is sad to see it falling into disrepair.

The station opened in 1905 and was the terminus of the Cairn Valley Light Railway branch from Dumfries, one of the last places in Scotland to be connected to the railway network. In those days a ticket to Dumfries cost 2/6 and the journey took an hour.

The line closed to passengers during WW2 , to freight in 1949 and the track lifted in 1953.

One of the songs we learned today :-)
