Crannog
We spent a long day catching up with my Australian friend on a day trip starting at the Scottish Crannog Centre at Kenmore. We had not heard of this but it proved to be most interesting, being an hour-long talk inside the reconstruction, which is based on archæological investigations of the iron-age Oakbank Crannog nearby. Through the debris which had accumulated below the crannog they can deduce not only the materials and tools and techniques the occupants used in construction but their diet and lifestyle as simple farmers: for example, at this time they would be cultivating crops of emmer, spelt and some flax but, though they had sheep, only in later times had dairy.produce or poultry.
From there we pootled along to the Falls of Dochart and returned to our friends' accommodation for a meal and much longer chat. Hopefully we will see them again before they return home.
