in need of TLC

Chris brought round two bikes - in bits - today.  Both are in need of some TLC.  And some fettling. (Yay - fettling).

The road bike (white and lime green job) is to be sold and needs tarting up (another technical term, used primarily when selling something).  This involves cleaning, servicing and making sure it all works properly.  And fitting the missing front wheel.

The mountain bike (behind) is a different kettle of fish.  This need converting to a ‘commuting’ type of bike.  So out go the suspension forks and knobbly tyres and in comes a pair of rigid forks, slick tyres, a luggage rack and possibly mudguards.  I say 'possibly' - he has his mother’s inherent hatred of anything that keeps the bike clean.

I much prefer converting to tarting up.  I get to use more tools and there is a certain mystique or ‘black arts’ known only to the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of fettlers, that makes the recipient gasp in amazement as they gaze upon, what is for them, a new bike.  The reality is, of course, the old one, cleaned and polished and with the addition of some new bits.  Non-fettlers are easily pleased.
