'I want to leave'

I've gone from living in a country many try to get to (obviously, and embarrassingly, they haven't heard how cruel we can be) to living in one people want to leave.

I volunteered with refugees back home and heard many sad and horrible stories.

Young men face bleak futures here, with little opportunities for employment, with unemployment estimated at 25%. Inflation is 14% and will rise; VAT increased 3% last week but prices have gone up 10-15% because there are no small coins for change. The poverty is obvious, even though I live well, I see it around me. And while there is a resilience of spirit I don't think it is enough.

Seeing this news broke my heart last night because it's so close to home.
