Dutch Drawbridge
The origin of a drawbridge goes back to the days of the castles where the surrounding moat (water) between the walls and the outer area had to be crossed by a bridge that can close.
As we are a country with a lot of water, this concept is broadly adopted by many farmers and smaller towns to protect their people and possessions, and in that process they came up with this design of a drawbridge with counterweights. It is a common sight in the Dutch land- and cityscape and is an important heritage landmark everywhere.
